Valentine’s Day: Overrated Or Not?
February 14, 2020
Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year to show our love towards one another through gifts, candies and cards. Should we buy gifts and goodies to celebrate love or is it all really just a corporate holiday?
Valentine’s Day Is Not Overrated
It’s that time of year again, everyone is searching for a date, making dinner reservations and scrambling to get the best and biggest gift to express their feelings to the one they love.
The main people who think Valentine’s Day is overrated are the single people, and this is because they feel they have no one to celebrate it with and that is not the case. Valentine’s Day is a day of romance and to show your love for one another, this can be celebrated between couples, friends or family. You don’t necessarily have to be in a romantic relationship with someone to be able to celebrate and enjoy Valentine’s Day.
Flowers, chocolate, cards and stuffed animals do indeed rise in price nearing Valentine’s Day. One of the biggest complaints is that Valentine’s Day is just a corporate holiday, like somehow Valentines Day was a direct result of “Let’s see how much money we can take from these people celebrating the love they have for one another.” Hallmark makes around 1,400 different varieties of Valentines Day cards alone but this shouldn’t be an issue. According to Alana Massey from theguardian.com, Hallmark is a family owned company who also owns Crayola. So how could Hallmark, the company who also owns Crayola who brings children joy in everyday life, really be scamming people just to take their money. The fact that people are spending money on Valentine’s Day cards shouldn’t be an issue, it is really just being taken out of proportion. No one said Valentine’s Day must be celebrated with cards, giant teddy bears or loads of candy. Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in any type of way one wishes.
Another reason Valentine’s Day is said to be an overrated holiday is because many feel that you shouldn’t show the person you love that you love them on one specific day, love should be shown and celebrated everyday. This is true, love shouldn’t be celebrated just one day a year. But the same thing could be said for all holidays such as Thanksgiving. Not nearly as many people complain about Thanksgiving being overrated saying things such as “why can’t we just be thankful everyday and feast everyday instead of just this one special day a year.” Now just because we make a big deal about loving one another on Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you can’t love a person everyday. Besides, it’s not like celebrating Valentine’s Day and doing these great romantic gestures is against the law to do any other one of the 364 days a year.
Valentine’s Day could be considered overrated, expensive and annoying overall for anyone who doesn’t have someone to celebrate. There are just so many reasons why Valentine’s Day should be celebrated and not considered overrated. The yummy candy, gifts galore and just the massive amount of love in the air should be a time to enjoy. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy candy 75% off the day after Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day Is Completely Overrated
It’s that time of year again when everyone is searching for a date, gifts are being bought, flower prices are rising, giant stuffed animals are being put on display and chocolates of all sorts are everywhere.
Valentines can easily be labeled as very materialistic. Valentine’s Day can give people a false sense of love through materialistic gifts. Huge bouquets of roses, boxes of chocolates and giant stuffed animals are exchanged on Valentine’s Day all being materialistic items. Usually, the amount and size of the gifts you receive signifies the more you are loved. It’s almost like everyone is in competition with one another showing off how much they love or are loved, this isn’t how love should be. According to Claude J Easy from thesocialman.com, whether you give gifts or not could also put your relationship into jeopardy, over half of women end their relationships due to not receiving a gift for Valentine’s Day. Not only is making Valentine’s Day so materialistic with gifts bad, but why is it a competition between couples to get bigger and better gifts for their special someone. Floral arrangements in the shape of a teddy bear may swoon many people but may also bring broken hearts and tears.
We all like to eat well, but we can forget about that on Valentines Day unless we plan far in advance because all the good restaurants are full from reservations made from months ago for this one special day. It is impossible to go out to a nice restaurant or even a moderately nice restaurant on February 14 without making a reservation ahead of time. Even if you do celebrate and like to enjoy a nice dinner on Valentine’s Day, you better make those reservations at least a week in advance otherwise you and your date may find yourselves eating a McDouble.
During Valentine’s season, most people celebrate with their significant others, which can often times make people feel lonely. Often times it is thought that people who are against Valentine’s Day are just single people who are selfish, well this may not always be the case. Businesses often think only about the money they are making and not about the people, seeing commercials of couples kissing or red and pink gifts everywhere for couples to exchange may bring some people into a deep depression and make them feel very alone during Valentine’s season. There may be other holidays such as Galentine’s Day which is celebrated with your girl friends, but this doesn’t change the fact that Valentine’s Day is truly all about couples.
When you sit down and really think about it, Valentine’s Day is a materialistic and overrated holiday that shouldn’t even be considered a real holiday.
