Walking in, clients are seen talking and laughing while receiving various hair, face, or nail services from their student stylists. Senior Melanie Martinez mixes colors for a client’s highlights and checks on another client having their hair dried after being bleached.
Wednesdays and Thursdays are ‘Salon Days’ for Cosmetology II. Experience working with clients gives them both real-world experience and helps them become comfortable with customer service.
During ‘Salon Days’, these future practitioners take in clients and guide them through setting up appointments and payment for services. One way to improve sales is to market themselves as practitioners and gain the trust of clients.
[We need to] “tell more people about all the fun things we do and to use social media as our main source of advertisement and maybe do announcements more often.”
This type of media helps broaden the overall spectrum of clients we receive so that they can become more experienced. This type of media also helps them broaden their experience with other hair types.
“A goal I hope to achieve is to have muscle memory when it comes to doing haircuts,” Martinez said.
This kind of service helps create a stylist who can work fast. The faster they work, the more money they can make in the future.
“My greatest achievement is how fast I have gotten at doing blowouts.”
This kind of service is in high demand from stylists and helps bring in a lot of clients, and is somewhat of a long process.
“Something I am grateful for learning is how to do highlights.”
This talent is in high demand from stylists and requires a lot of patience and skill for those students interested in the various skills learned in Cosmo.
Having a career in cosmetology takes a lot of hard work, according to Martinez. And she feels that anyone interested in the profession should seek their education as soon as possible.
“Do it! Start and don’t give up. Whatever you want to learn about Cosmetology, make sure to be consistent and practice regularly. You are the only one who is gonna be able to finish what you started. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, but don’t rely on others to finish your work.”
