The Black Student Union (BSU) is a club that celebrates Black culture and history in a fun and engaging way. However, the students who once ran the club have since graduated, and the BSU has been inactive ever since. Fortunately, that fact is no longer.
During the 2023-2024 school year, junior Ase Adewunmi decided to restart, revive, and rebrand the club as the Black Student Association (BSA).
“(I) knew the former president and founder of the Hispanic Students Association, and seeing her create a club for her culture made me want to do the same,” Adewunmi said.
One of the challenges Adewunmi faced was learning how the process began. She managed this by looking at examples of prior clubs and inquiring the school administration for help. It is important to have a club that celebrates Black culture, and is a fun environment for members to connect and identify.
“I just want others to leave the BSA meetings in excitement for the next [one] and to make memories with both the officers and general members,” Adewunmi said. “BSA to me is an organization that will hopefully uplift Black voices and provide another example of Black students impacting the community.”
plans to Adewunmi grow and develop as a club president and leader.
(I) learned [to get things done immediately] to have the greatest chance of success.” Adewunmi said. “…Honestly sometimes with leadership it doesn’t matter if people like you, as long as the job gets done successfully and no one takes criticism too personally.”
